End point assessment (EPA) is an important part of vocational education and training (VET), helping to ensure that learners receive a high-quality, well-rounded education that will prepare them for the workplace. It can also play an important role in helping to improve the quality and consistency of VET qualifications. However, there are common mistakes which can have a negative impact on the quality of the assessment process and the final qualifications awarded. Types Of End Point Assessment Mistakes:
- Going too fast- Learners not thinking about knowledge tests as they are speeding through the answers often getting a lower mark than they should be getting.
- Crossing the word limit- if a question has a 500-word limit, it’s important to stick to that limit. Rambling on for too long will only result in losing marks
- No access to portfolio when doing a professional discussion.
- Learner does not know the difference between a good portfolio and a bad one.
- Inadequate practice- lack of practice to overcome the nerves. Learner needs to do mock with another tutor that they are not familiar with.
- Not understanding the process- no assessment planning meeting have been conducted with learners.
- Long waits for booking dates for components- Learners are taking assessments months after they were prepared.
- Learner picks up EPA tools too late- Training Provider/College does not register learner with EPAO at the right time.
- Mock materials either not used or not up to standard.
- Training provider/college fails to prepare learner for professional discussion- Learner does not know how to discuss points in detail with examples.
